WATERSHED MOMENT FOR GREEK ORGANISATIONS

MORE than 70 representatives of Greek organisations participated in a special meeting organised by the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) at the Greek Centre, on Wednesday 14 June, to discuss issues concerning the GCM and the Greek community as a whole. They were informed by members of the GCM Board of Directors about development plans for the Bulleen property and the proposed onsite Cultural Centre as well as the creation of a Greek Organisations Club on the 3rd floor of the current Greek Centre | MORE

GREEK MINISTER VISITS THE GREEK CENTRE

Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Greece, Terence Quick, during his recent trip to Australia visited the Greek Centre, together with the Ambassador of Greece to Australia, Ekaterini Xagorari and Consul General of Greece in Melbourne, Christina Simantiraki. Minister Quick had an extensive and productive meeting with the Board Members of the Greek Community of Melbourne and was briefed on the organisation's history and activities (Photo).

LIVE AT THE GREEK: REBETIKA REVEALED
The Greek Centre is set to become a Friday night favourite again with the return of Live at The Greek, a fortnightly music program showcasing Melbourne’s best Greek musicians.
Rebetika Revealed, hosted by Anthea Sidiropoulos (vocals), will be a night of soul-revealing Greek urban blues, a fusion of rebetika, smyrneika and laika. Guest musicians include: Achilles Yiangoulli (vocals, bouzouki, tzoura, bagalma, dubeleki), Jacob Papadopoulos (bouzouki, tzoura), Nikos Koutsaliotis (vocals, bouzouki), Nicholas Baltas (guitar), Agapi Gioftsidis (vocals) and Theano Milides (violin). Special Guest, ethnomusicologist Demeter Tsounis (Adelaide) will join the group following her lecture on Rebetika & their Asia Minor Roots at The Greek Centre on Thursday 13 July.

LIVE AT THE GREEK featuring DIO + DIO
Brand new act Dio + Dio (2 + 2) will hit the stage on Friday 28 July, a hybrid Cretan-Macedonian four-piece who will play a combination of northern and southern sounds. The line up features George Vardakis (lyra, vocals), John Lionakis (laouto), Joseph Tsombanopoulos (gaida, askomantoura, flogera, vocals), and Dimitris Tsombanopoulos (percussion).
