SEMINAR: PRACTICING TOWARD VIRTUE

Professor Margaret Cameron from the University of Melbourne, will give a lecture entitled Practicing toward virtue, or, why it shouldn’t hurt to be good, on Thursday 22 April 2021, at 7.00pm, as part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars, offered by the Greek Community of Melbourne. In this lecture, Professor Cameron will take a fresh look at Aristotle’s writings on ethics and consider their relevance to us today.

CONCERT: SONGS OF LIBERATION BY GREECE'S FOUR GREAT COMPOSERS

The Greek Community of Melbourne, in celebration of the 200 year anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821, is proud to present: Tsitsanis, Hatzidakis, Xarchakos, Theodorakis: Songs of liberation by Greece’s four great composers. Being performed at Melbourne Recital Centre on Saturday 29 May by international vocalist, Dimitris Bassis, and conductor, George Ellis, directing a symphony orchestra. Honouring the way that music and song have inspired Hellenes to struggle for better world, the concert presents songs of revolution, liberation, and empowerment created by four great composers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries: Vassilis Tsitsanis, Manos Hatzidakis, Stavros Xarchakos and Mikis Theodorakis.

VALE GEORGE ZANGALIS

George Zangalis, a long standing member of our Organisation, quietly passed away on the 26th of March, surrounded until his last moments by his loving family. George, a true visionary, was one of the major proponents and advocates of multiculturalism in Australia, as well as a fierce campaigner for social justice and workers rights. The Community in conjunction with the Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU),Radio 3ZZZ, and numerous other community organisations will be celebrating George’s life of activism on Sunday the 25th of April 2021, 2.30 pm at the Andrianakos Centre, Alphington Grammar School. We are looking forward to our members and the broader community coming together to reflect and honour George’s remarkable Contribution.

THE GCM’s PROGRAM CELEBRATING 200th ANNIVERSARY OF THE GREEK REVOLUTION OF 1821

2021 sees Greece and the Greek diaspora celebrating the 200 year anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821 and the creation of the modern Greek state. To celebrate this event the Greek Community of Melbourne and Victoria, with the support of the official Greece21 Committee, has created a year long program of events for your enjoyment.
