EXPLORING AND PRESENTING OUR HISTORY AS GREEK-AUSTRALIANS

Two fascinating lectures which undoubtedly contributed to the building of the Greek Australian narrative, were presented recently at the Greek Centre as a part of the Greek history and Culture Seminars, offered by the Greek Community of Melbourne. Dr Konstandina Dounis from Monash University, on Wednesday 20th of August, spoke about the experiences of young Greeks growing up in Australia during the 50s,60s and 70s.

Also, Con Vaitsas spoke about the infamous Greek Social Security “scandal” of the late 70s. Many Greeks were unfairly targeted, being accused of “rorting” the system and were subjected to unwarranted interrogation by the then Commonwealth Police as well as the Department of Social Security.

LIVE AT THE GREEK: THE PHILHELLENES

The Music of Panagiotis Toundas: He was a pioneer who shaped the musical sound of Greece for decades. Not only was he an exceptional composer, but he also paved the way for many refugee composers who had settled in mainland Greece. Many of his rebetiko songs were sung by well-known singers, such as Stelios Perpiniadis, Kostas Roukounas, Roza Eskenazi and Rita Abatzi.  The Philhellenes features Mairead Hannan (from the Xylouris Ensemble) on violin and voice, Wayne Simmons (from Polyxeni) on guitar, accordion and banjo, Con Kalamaras (from the Melbourne Rebetiko Ensemble) on guitar and tzouras, and double bass player Adrian Close. This intimate performance will be a celebration of music and life.
