ST GEORGE THORNBURY POP UP EXCEEDS ALL EXPECTATIONS

The Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) recently partnered with the Victorian Government’s Department of Health and Human Services, DPV Health and the Hellenic Medical Society of Australia (HMSA) to deliver a Vaccination Pop Up at its St George Greek Orthodox Church Hall in Thornbury this past weekend. For four days from 27 August, DPV Health staff saw and vaccinated 986 people derived from a broad spectrum of the community that included older local Greek residents, younger students and members of the greater Thornbury area.

Η Κοινότητά μας συνεργάστηκε πρόσφατα με τη βικτοριανή κυβέρνηση και το Υπουργείο Υγείας και Ανθρώπινων Υπηρεσιών, και την Ελληνική Ιατρική Εταιρεία Αυστραλία (HMSA) για να λειτουργήσει ένα προσωρινό κέντρο εμβολιασμού στην αίθουσα εκδηλώσεων της Ελληνικής Ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας του Αγίου Γεωργίου στο Thornbury, το Σαββατοκύριακο που πέρασε.

PAPASTERGIADIS APPOINTED TO THE VMC

Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC) Chair Viv Nguyen announced, on Wednesday 25 August, the eight newly appointed commissioners which will join the VMC. Key amongst these for the Greek Community was our very own President Bill Papastergiadis OAM.

ALBANESE MEETS WITH GCM BOARD MEMBERS

The Leader of the Federal Opposition Anthony Albanese alongside Victorian Federal Labour MP Peter Khalil recently met with members of the GCM to discuss a number of issues that are pertinent to the GCM and its members.   GCM President Bill Papastergiadis was joined in online meeting by GCM Board members Dr Jim Bossinakis, Leo Vlahakis and Greek Centre Director Jorge Menidis as a broad range of issues were discussed that included: Living with Covid issues vaccinations, border closures, vaccination passports and the temporary extension to pensions for people stuck overseas during the pandemic;  the teaching of languages other than English and the Double Taxation Treaty with Greece.

THE 124th ANNIVERSARY OF THE GREEK COMMUNITY

COVID-19 continues to challenge the way we do things at the Community and it’s disappointing that the event planned on the 22nd of August to celebrate the 124th anniversary of the Greek Community of Melbourne, as well as the raising of the Aboriginal, Greek and Australian flags at our Lonsdale St Headquarters had to postponed. The event was to bring together the “Elders “ of the Greek and Aboriginal communities acknowledging the strong respect and history that exists between them and to celebrate the Community’s AGM decision to endorse the Uluru Statement from the heart.

MELBOURNE’S GREEK COMMUNITY UNITES TO HELP THOSE FIGHTING THE FIRES IN GREECE

Greece is experienced one of the worst fire disasters in its history as devastating wildfires rip through land that has been made tinder try following the hottest summer in over 30 years. We are raising funds for the heroic Hellenic Volunteer Fire Fighters Association (HVFFA) who are fighting these fires throughout Greece. A coalition of not for profit Greek community organisations has come together on this drive.
