THE 2020 AGM

OnThursday 28 January, the Greek Community of Melbourne held its Annual General Meeting at the Greek Centre and via Zoom for members and Live streamed live on Facebook. The meeting was addressed by members of the Greek Community Executive. The AGM considered and passed unanimously a motion in support to: 1. Permanently raise the Australian, the Greek and the Aboriginal flags at the Greek Centre. 2. Place as soon as possible signage that clearly identifies The Greek Centre as the HQ of the GOCMV. 3. Endorsing and adopting in its entirety the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

REINFORCING LINKS WITH GREEK UNIVERSITIES

The General Secretariat for Public Diplomacy and Greeks Abroad and the General Secretariat of Higher Education invited prominent members of the diaspora and international academic community to take part in a virtual conference, titled “Reinforcing links between Greek Universities and the Greek diaspora”. GCM President Bill Papastergiadis presented at the conference in which he spoke amongst other things on the GCM’s existing education programs, its existing cooperation with Greek Universities whilst proposing a number of initiatives in which Greek University presence could be better felt in the diaspora.

GREECE21 SEMINARS: SEMINARS FOR THE GREEK WAR OF INDEPENDENCE

Yianni Cartledge will present a two-part series of lectures entitled "Greek War of Independence (1821-1832): Between history and ‘mythistory" as part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars offered by the Greek Community of Melbourne and in collaboration with NUGAS. The first part will be presented on 18 February 2021 at 7.00pm.

ONLINE PROGRAM: GREEK FOR LATE BEGINNERS 10-18 yo

A new online program for late beginners is being offered by the GCΜ. It is aimed at students aged 10-18 who wish to start learning Greek at a beginner’s level. This course provides students with the opportunity to develop their communication skills in Modern Greek and their knowledge and understanding of the Greek language and culture. Classes will be limited to 10 students. New courses are commencing in early February.

THE 2021 SEMINAR SERIES PROGRAM 

The program for the GCM’s Greek History and Culture Seminar Series for 2021 has been released. As 2021 coincides with the 200th anniversary of the Greek War of Independence, it’s probably the most ambitious series attempted so far. More than half the program has been dedicated to 1821 themes. SURVEY ON DIMENTIA

The National Ageing Research Institute (NARI) has developed 3 short films about dementia in Greek with English subtitles with carers of people living with the disease. NARI now seeks assistance from the general Greek-speaking community to help them evaluate the films. Participants need to be of Greek background and of 18 years and over. The GCM offers a free HELPLINE service from its HQ with the aim of directing community members but in particular Greek citizens accordingly during the CODIV-19 crisis.
