THE GCM JOINS THE CONDEMNATION OF TURKEY'S DECISION TO REINSTATE HAGIA SOFIA BACK TO A MOSQUE

The GCM joint strong worldwide condemnation of the Turkish Republic’s recent decision to reinstate the World Heritage listed Hagia Sofia as a mosque. Built in 537, the famous monument stood as an Orthodox cathedral for almost 1000 years and was converted to a museum in 1937. The GCM has written to the Australian Prime Minister and leading ministers and MP’s seeking support on the matter.

Η Ελληνική Ορθόδοξη Κοινότητα Μελβούρνης & Βικτώριας καταδικάζει απερίφραστα την απόφαση της Τουρκίας να μετατρέψει πάλι σε τζαμί την Αγία Σοφία, ένα μνημείο της Παγκόσμιας Κληρονομιάς. Σχετικές επιστολές έστειλε η Κοινότητα στον Πρωθυπουργό και υπουργούς της Αυστραλίας ζητώντας να καταδικάσουν την κίνηση της Τουρκίας.

GREEK LANGUAGE TEACHER APPOINTED AT COBURG WEST PRIMARY SCHOOL

The GCM wholeheartedly welcomes the appointment of a teacher that will allow the Greek language program at Coburg West Primary School to recommence in term three. The Greek Community of Melbourne, in conjunction with a large group of school parents, has campaigned strongly over the past two years to ensure the return of the Greek program.

NEW ONLINE MODERN GREEK COURSE FOR ADULTS

Following the success of the GCM’s online education program, this new course has been added to our suite of education programs offering beginner adults an online opportunity to study Modern Greek and their knowledge and understanding of the Greek language and culture. This elementary level will introduce the Greek alphabet, greetings and introductions, and how to describe various daily activities. No prior knowledge of Greek is required.

NEW FREE INTRODUCTORY COURSE TO CLASSICAL GREEK

Classical Greek (Ancient Greek) brings you closer to the origins of philosophy, science, politics, rhetoric, history and literature and this new FREE course is designed to encourage Year 7 and 8 students to jump onboard.  Be inspired by the classical world, read the architects of western civilization in their own words and be positioned perfectly to take on the subject in year 9 as part of your VCE pathway.

ΔΩΡΕΑΝ ΔΙΑΔΙΚΤΥΑΚΟ ΕΙΣΑΓΩΓΙΚΟ ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑ ΣΤΑ ΑΡΧΑΙΑ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ
Το Πρόγραμμα απευθύνεται σε μαθητές πρώτης και δευτέρας Γυμνασίου που επιθυμούν να διευρύνουν την πολιτιστική τους μόρφωση και  να το επιλέξουν το επόμενο σχολικό έτος (2021) ως αντικείμενο του προγράμματος σπουδών τους, το οποίο θα τους επιτρέψει να συμμετάσχουν στις εξετάσεις VCE Classical Greek και να επωφεληθούν από την υψηλή του βαθμολογική επιδότηση.

NEW ONLINE PROGRAM - GREEK FOR LATE BEGINNERS

A new GCM online program for late beginners is commencing in mid-July. It is aimed at students aged 10-18 who wish to start learning Greek at a beginner’s level. This course provides students with the opportunity to develop their communication skills in Modern Greek and their knowledge and understanding of the Greek language and culture. Classes will be limited to 10 students. No prior knowledge of Greek is required. The online courses will be provided every Monday afternoon, from 4:30 - 6:30.

Ένα νέο πρόγραμμα που θα προσφέρεται αποκλειστικά μέσω διαδικτύου ξεκινάει στα μέσα Ιουλίου η Κοινότητά μας. Το πρόγραμμα απευθύνεται σε μαθητές ηλικίας 10 -18 ετών που ξεκινούν να μαθαίνουν ελληνικά για πρώτη φορά. Στόχος του προγράμματος είναι η ανάπτυξη των επικοινωνιακών και διαπολιτισμικών δεξιοτήτων των μαθητών στα ελληνικά. Τα ηλεκτρονικά μαθήματα θα προσφέρονται κάθε Δευτέρα απόγευμα, από τις 4:30 έως τις 6:30. Tα τμήματα θα είναι ολιγομελή (μέχρι 10 άτομα).

OUR SCHOOLS CONTINUE ONLINE

As much as we wanted to get back to normal, it appears that normal is still out of reach.  Having completed Term 2 online we once again go back to class in Term 3 – online.   Our priority is always the health and safety of both our Greek community members and the broader Victorian community and of course in particular our children.
