FEDERAL GOVERNMENT $5m COMMITMENT TO GCM

The Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) welcomes the re-election of the Federal Government, which had committed $5 million in the 2019-20 budget to our organisation. The funding will be used for two priority projects – the Greek Centre Hub in Melbourne and a Hellenic Chair in Global Diasporas at the School of Culture and Communications at the University of Melbourne, both with an estimated cost of $2.5 million.

GCM President Bill Papastergiadis visited Athens recently on business and used the opportunity to meet with the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Bank of Greece, Costas Michailidis and the former Deputy Chairman and current member of the Board of Directors  Dimitrios Dimopoulos.

Greek military officials, Vice Admiral Ioannis Paxivanakis HN and Lieutenant Colonel Christos Anastasiadis of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff who were in Melbourne for the celebrations of the Battle of Crete, visited the the Greek Center and met with Board and staff members.

Theodorakis’ famous ode to Greece made a remarkable script for an exceptional night of music at the Recital Centre recently.   Led by George Ellis who used everything at his disposal including the angelic voice of Dimitris Basis, blew away the sold out audience in a stellar performance.

THE GREEK WRITER'S FESTIVAL AT THE GREEK CENTRE 

The Greek Writers Festival makes its debut at the Greek Centre from 31 May to 8 June with an impressive line up of writers and events, including panels, readings, performances and workshops that both challenge and entertain, with the aim of fostering a broader cultural, political and literary dialogue. In 2019, the theme of the festival is DIASPORIC DIALOGUES with the programme promoting participation from Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian, African, Middle Eastern, Jewish and Australian First Nations writers and performers as well as those who identify as queer. TICKETS AT THE DOOR

LIVE AT THE GREEK: Mayhane

The Greek Centre is proud to present Meyhané on Friday 14 June Live at The Greek.  Meyhané will be presenting songs from their latest CD "What shall I sing for you", featuring archival and rare sounds from Eastern Thrace. The group will also be performing songs and dances from various parts of Greece and Asia Minor

Meyhané are: Paddy Montgomery constantinopolitan lyra, yayli tanbur, saz. Tony Iliou lute, vocals. George Kiriakidis percussion, vocals. Lambros Kappas oud, vocals. Guest musician: George Athanasakos, kaval, clarinet
