GREEK STUDIES AT LA TROBE

As has been widely reported in recent weeks, a coalition of community groups and leaders has been put together by the GCM to lobby La Trobe University for the future of its Greek Studies program. The University has met with members of the Greek Community and the coalition amongst others in recent days to explore the issue. Over 6500 signatures were gathered by LTU students and a letter writing campaign from many community organisations, members of the community and parliamentarians reached the University. ONLINE ENROLLMENTS FOR THE 2021 SCHOOL YEAR

The Greek Community of Melbourne Language Schools provide innovative and high-quality Greek Language and Culture classes for students from Kinder to VCE. Children learn to speak Greek in a fun and engaging environment, through song, dance, crafts and creative drama during the early years, as well as more formal methods as they reach appropriate ages.

GREEK FOR LATE BEGINNERS - NEW CLASSES START ON FEBRUARY 2021

A new online program for late beginners is being offered by the GCM since mid-July. It is aimed at students aged 10-18 who wish to start learning Greek at a beginner’s level. This course provides students with the opportunity to develop their communication skills in Modern Greek and their knowledge and understanding of the Greek language and culture. Classes will be limited to 10 students. No prior knowledge of Greek is required. New courses are commencing in February 2021. For more information and to enrol, click on greekcommunity.com.au/glb

Ένα νέο πρόγραμμα που προσφέρεται αποκλειστικά μέσω διαδικτύου ξεκίνησε στα μέσα Ιουλίου η Κοινότητά μας. Το πρόγραμμα απευθύνεται σε μαθητές ηλικίας 10 -18 ετών που ξεκινούν να μαθαίνουν ελληνικά για πρώτη φορά. Στόχος του προγράμματος είναι η ανάπτυξη των επικοινωνιακών και διαπολιτισμικών δεξιοτήτων των μαθητών στα ελληνικά. Καινούργια τμήματα θα ξεκινήσουν τον Φεβρουάριο. Tα τμήματα θα είναι ολιγομελή (μέχρι 10 άτομα).

THE PROGRAM FOR 2021 SEMINAR SERIES: Major focus on 1821 War of Independence  

The program for the GCM’s Greek History and Culture Seminar Series for 2021 has just been released. As 2021 coincides with the 200th anniversary of the Greek War of Independence, it’s probably the most ambitious series attempted so far. More than half the program has been dedicated to 1821 themes. THI LAUNCHES WINTER APPEAL FOR GREECE

With Greece in the grip of second wave of COVID-19, The Hellenic Initiative Australia (THI) has launched an online Winter Appeal to support people facing severe hardship over the coming months. Funds raised will assist THI Australia’s trusted partner charities in Greece, which face additional challenges supporting the vulnerable and the destitute during the pandemic.
