INTRODUCING THE CLUB AT THE GREEK CENTRE

The Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) officially handed keys to its brand new CLUB ROOMS AT THE GREEK CENTRE to the first of what is hoped will be many members, the Argos Orestikon Association (AO) in a special event at the Greek Center last Wednesday. The Club on Level 12 of the Lonsdale Street Greek Centre, is a modern and private facility that is now the "new home" for the AO members where they regularly will meet. In addition to the well-appointed lounge, AO has access to all of the facilities of the Greek Centre including the function space, gallery and secretarial services of the GCM.   AO donated a million dollars to the GCM for its cultural centre with a view of seeing its money used to fund language and cultural programs that the GCM has become synonymous with.   “We feel very much at home and well looked after” said AO Hon Secretary Jim Megas as he and his committee called on other organisations to join them at The Club by considering a similar donation to the GCM.

GCM SCHOOLS WIN 4 AWARDS AT THE 8TH STUDENT GREEK FILM FESTIVAL

A total of four prizes were awarded to GCM students in the 8th Student Film Festival, held recently as part fo the 25th Greek Film Festival. This year’s SFF featured 18 student films from schools in Victoria and New South Wales.

BEHROUZ BOOCHANI. JOURNALIST. POET. AUTHOR. MANUS ISLAND DETAINEE.

Authors, artists, musicians’ and scholars engaged with Behrouz Boochani and his novel 'No friend but the Mountains' at the Greek Centre. In an exceptional evening in which artists, writers, scholars and musicians, engaged with, and celebrated the work of Kurdish-Iranian writer and journalist Behrouz Boochani, and his extraordinary novel, ‘No Friend but the Mountains’. In a unique event that crossed oceans and cultural boundaries, Boochani appeared live online from Manus Island, and his translator and collaborator, Omid Tofighian, live from Cairo. The evening also featured an address from guest speaker, political activist and academic Professor Gary Foley, was opened by First Nations musician Bart Willoughby and Kurdish musician Fadil Suna, and was hosted by Nikos Papastergiadis, Director of the Research Unit in Public Cultures at the University of Melbourne, Arnold Zable, writer and human rights advocate, Janet Galbraith, writer and refugee advocate, and award-winning photographer Hoda Afshar.
