Synopsis

After the defeat of the Democratic Army of Greece at the Battle of Grammos in August 1949, around 100,000 people found themselves in political exile in the People's Democracies of Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. Of these, approximately 12,000 Democratic Army combatants were settled in Tashkent, the capital of Soviet Uzbekistan. They comprised the surviving core military force, the officer corps and those most capable of continuing the struggle abroad. Nick Dallas, one of the first researchers to examine the archives of the Greek Community of Tashkent, presents for the first time data from the registration processes that took place in early years. The examination of thousands of registration cards containing personal and military details of the combatants has allowed the development of a very accurate and detailed picture of the people that constituted the Democratic Army of Greece.
