Gala-night feature: The Last Note

This year's Opening Night feature The Last Note by Pantelis Voulgaris is a heart-rending story of one of the darkest episodes of Nazi occupation in Greece.

Co-written by Voulgaris’ wife and acclaimed novelist Ioanna Karystiani, the film recounts the lead-up to the mass execution of 200 Greek war prisoners in Chaidari concentration camp in retaliation to the ambush of four Nazi officers.

Opening remarks by Phil Kafcaloudes, grandson of one of the victims (Astor only)

Phil’s grandfather, Christos Maniarizis was one of the Haidari 200 massacred by the Germans on the 1st of May, 1944. Christos was a 28 year old Volos newspaperman with a young wife and nine-year old son when the Metaxas regime came to power in 1936.
He, like many other journalists around Greece, railed against the coup and the dissolution of democracy. The Prime Minister ordered Christos and many other journalists to be arrested, demanding they pledge allegiance to the new government.
Those who refused were taken to an island near Santorini for some years, before returning to the mainland. From the time of his arrest to the massacre eight years later, Christos never saw a moment of freedom.

Phil Kafcaloudes is a lecturer and industry fellow in the Media & Communication department at RMIT University in Melbourne.

Music

A Greek Film Festival opening gala would not be complete without traditional Greek music delivered live by some of the best musicians Melbourne has to offer.

For this reason we are honoured to have booked "Mikri Kompania" for Astor, and "Ilias Gilos and Friends" for Como.

Goodies, Food and Drinks

Our generous sponsors  have provided a number of goodies to be given out, in our very special 25th Greek Film Festival branded tote-bag to each and every guest of our opening night Gala (you'll find your tote placed on your cinema seat).

Food and drinks for the night will be provided by some of the most prominent names in Greek Catering: Gringlish & Bahari at Astor and Atlas Catering at Como.
