Synopsis

The Greek financial crisis which commenced late in 2009, featured heavily in the international news media. It captured the imagination of political cartoonists worldwide, filling pages with a rich range of allegories, visual metaphors as well as word play exploring Greece’s then current circumstances. Many drew on symbols of ruin, especially of the country’s classical past: teetering temples, crumbling columns, and shattered pottery. Others exploited stereotypes, often negative, of Greeks being lazy, incompetent, or excessively hedonistic.

By collecting and analysing a vast range of cartoons from the financial crisis period, I will explore the common themes that emerge in both the international and the Greek domestic media, reflecting on their similarities and differences. I will then consider the value and impact of political cartooning, as well as reflect more broadly on what this may contribute to an understanding of how Greece is represented internationally.
