Live At The Greek: The Philhellenes

Greek Centre
/ Friday 6 September 2019, 8.30pm

The Music of Panagiotis Toundas: He was a pioneer who shaped the musical sound of Greece for decades. Not only was he an exceptional composer, but he also paved the way for many refugee composers who had settled in mainland Greece. Many of his rebetiko songs were sung by well-known singers, such as Stelios Perpiniadis, Kostas Roukounas, Roza Eskenazi and Rita Abatzi.  The Philhellenes features Mairead Hannan (from the Xylouris Ensemble) on violin and voice, Wayne Simmons (from Polyxeni) on guitar, accordion and banjo, Con Kalamaras (from the Melbourne Rebetiko Ensemble) on guitar and tzouras, and double bass player Adrian Close. This intimate performance will be a celebration of music and life.
