Celebrating our History

A series of lectures and presentations will be presented to celebrate our 120th anniversary. These include:

A Love letter to Crete: Xamou

A love letter to Crete, Clio Fanouraki's XAMOU is a coming-of-middle-age story starring Georges Corraface as Johnny, a career high-fllyer forced to return to the land in the face of the economic crisis. Boasts breathtaking cinematography of the sun-soaked Cretan terrain. Special guests for the evening include musicians from Crete Manolis Alexakis & Giorgos Rerakis who will perform with local musician Tony Iliou.

Lecture on Kanzatzakis at the Greek Centre

Mr George Stasinakis, President of the International Society of Friends of Nikos Kazantzakis, will present a lecture titled “Kazantzakis and Crete” as part of a worldwide tour in 2017 – marking the 60th anniversary of Kazantzakis’s death.

Lecture: Early Greek Community History

Researcher Juliana Charpantidou will present a lecture on the events that helped shape the Greek Community of Melbourne from its inception to the end of World War II.

Theatre: NK - A Kazantzakian Montage

On the 60th anniversary of his death, Q44 Theatre presents the world premiere of "NK: A Kazantzakian Montage", an exploration of the life and work of Crete’s most famous writer Nikos Kazantzakis.

Panel Discussion: Histories of immigration and refuge

Four historians discuss hidden histories of immigration and refuge to Australia from 1947 to the 1970s
